Good morning with a word for the day-
What did Jesus mean when He said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden?”
I asked my grandsons this question and they answered that it meant those who work, God would give them rest from that work. Really, that answer is partially true. Jesus did mean that He would give us rest from our physical labors but it has nothing to do with our daily work. It has to do with keeping the law. God had given ten commandments. Men had turned it into over six hundred things that the Jewish people could or could not do; even down to how far you could walk on the Sabbath. The Scribes and Pharisees enforced those laws to the point that serving God became a burden instead of a joy. The people were laden down with dread trying to please God, instead of knowing and receiving the love of God, and returning that love in obedience to obey God.
Jesus said in John 8:36, “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” In Matthew 5:17, regarding the law, Jesus said, “I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” When I receive Christ into my heart, He fulfills the law for me. Not meaning that I should not obey God's law, but that now I do it for a love of God and because of the love of God. Now God's law does not burden me down. Now I do not have to be afraid to live my life in fear of disappointing God. Now I am led by the Spirit to worship and praise God and I am free from the heaviness of the law. I have been set free by the One who kept the law to the letter of the law. Jesus meant come unto me and I will carry the burden of the law for you.
Lay down your burdens to the only One that came to give you rest. And be set free by Christ Jesus today!
